CRITIQUE
The Cairn Terrier Club Open Show
Sunday 11th October 2009
It was an honour to be asked to judge this well run show, and I would like to thank the committee for inviting me. It is obvious that the committee work extremely hard to ensure that everyone enjoys a relaxed and friendly atmosphere.
I would like to say a big thank you to both of my stewards on the day, Betty and Laura, who helped to make my job so much easier. It was also nice to see younger handlers and I hope that they will continue to be interested in the breed. I hope that there are some good ring craft clubs to help encourage them.
I found that on the whole, the bitches had more strength in quality, which worries me as to our future in breeding terms, however, all temperaments were good and on the whole mouths were good too.
Minor Puppy Dog (3,1)
1st –Torren’s CORNTON RUARIDH DHU. 6 mth wheaten brindle. Nice masculine head, correct dentition, good reach of neck, nicely balanced, held a level topline and moved well for one so young. Handled well, may I suggest talking to him more to keep his attention?
2nd – Lamb & Saltmarsh’s BIRSELAW FABLE. 8.5 mths. Nice head and expression, Movement not as good as 1, and tail set not as I would like.
Puppy Dog (2,0)
1st – Lamb & Saltmarsh’s BIRSELAW FABLE
2nd – Harley’s CHREAGHARBH SIR JACK. 9.5 mths. Nice head and expression good coat. Would be good to see him with a little less weight and trimmed. Obviously enjoyed his day out, which made his movement a little difficult to assess. Ringcraft practice may help.
Junior Dog (1,0)
1st – Miller’s BIRSELAW BADGER’S DREAM FOR CORNTON.
Grey brindle with a good expression, nice length of neck good shoulders, held level topline on the move.
Maiden Dog (3,1)
1st –Torren’s CORNTON RUARIDH DHU
2nd – Lamb & Saltmarsh’s BIRSELAW FABLE
Novice Dog (2,0)
1st – Miller’s BIRSELAW BADGER’S DREAM FOR CORNTON
2nd – Rutherford’s CHAPELWAYS CHEEKY WEE MAN AT KIRKGREEN. Obviously enjoying himself. A little overweight, lacking in coat would prefer a better tail set, which spoils his outline. Nice head and expression.
Graduate Dog (1,0)
1st Berrecloth’s SYBSTER SHIRAZ. Wheaten, with a nice harsh coat. Gorgeous head and expression with correct eye. Overall a nice balanced dog, held level topline and moved well. Good depth of brisket , however for me his tail spoils his outline, especially on the move.
Limit Dog (4,0)
1st – Catto’s BIRSELAW FOLLOW YOUR DREAM. Grey brindle with a beautiful head and expression. Moved with drive, good length of neck which flowed into correct shoulders. Nice topline, and good tailset. Well up in size, however I feel he still has some maturing to do, but am sure he has a good future ahead of him. RBD
2nd – Smith’s ROCASOVALE RAZZLE DAZZLE. Nice head and expression would prefer a little more length of neck, good shoulders moved well. Of a heavier type than one.
3rd – Chirnside’s SOUTRA LITTLE LION
Open Dog (2,0)
1st – Cameron’s CH STRYVELING ROBB RUADH. Red with gorgeous head and expression, good stop, correct dentition. Good shoulders, nice depth of brisket and correct length of loin. Moved true from front and rear and with drive. Showed well. It was my pleasure to award him BIS.
2nd – Rutherford’s CHAPELWAYS CHEEKY WEE MAN AT KIRKGREEN.
Veteran Dog or Bitch (4,2)
1st -
2nd – Evans’ BIRSELAW BILLY THE KID AT KAPPLEGILL a lively 7 year old. Nice head, a little short in length of neck, would also prefer better angulation on rear. Moved a little close behind. Appeared to thoroughly enjoy his day out.
Special ‘Best Little Pal’ Puppy Dog or Bitch (3,0)
1st –Torren’s CORNTON RUARIDH DHU.
2nd – Johnstone’s CORNTON AILLSE. Litter sister to 1. Nicely presented showy pup. Nice shoulders, good outline, moved fairly well, would prefer a better tailset.
3rd – Waddell’s CHREAGHARBH FURY’S ANGEL. Sweet head and expression, will look better when trimmed . Nicely handled by Emma
Special ‘Best Little Pal’ Open Dog or Bitch (2,0)
1st – Johnstone’s CORNTON AILLSE.
2nd – Allen’s CORNTON RIABHACH Grey brindle with softer coat than I would like. Nicely presented, fair movement, not as showy as 1.
Special New Members Dog or Bitch (3,0)
1st –Torren’s CORNTON RUARIDH DHU
2nd – Lamb & Saltmarsh’s BIRSELAW FABLE
3rd – Harley’s CHREAGHARBH SIR JACK

Puppy Bitch (1, 0)
1st -
Junior Bitch (4,0)
1st – Templeton’s LARCHLEA CAN’T REMEMBER. Brindle with a fantastic head and expression, good stop and correct shape and colour of eye. Correct dentition. Correct shoulder placement, good length of neck, nice outline both on the move and standing. Moved with drive. Alert and ready to go!
2nd-
3rd – Bustard’s Larchlea My Elusive Dream
Maiden Bitch (4,0)
1st -
2nd –Millers CORNTON REAY
Novice Bitch (2,0)
1st-
2nd – Chirnside’s SOUTRA ISLE TO MORRA Pleasing head and expression, good mouth. Nicely balanced moved well, stopped showing after a while.
3 rd – Berrecloth’s Sybster Sonja
Graduate Bitch (5 ,0)
1st Evan’s-
2nd Berrecloths – SYBSTER SANCERE Sweet head and expression . Good length of neck. I would prefer more balanced angulations, as it spoilt her front movement. Showed well.
3RD -
Limit Bitch (6,2)
1st – Wren’s LARCHLEA SPIRIT IN THE SKY. Caught my eye as she entered the ring Dark Brindle with a gorgeous head and expression with a correct eye. Nice length of neck, well balanced which showed when she moved, a correct tailset finished her outline both on the move and stood. Presented in good coat. BB
2nd – BIRSELAW BEWITCHED. Slightly taller than 1, however, a nicely balanced bitch with good reach of neck and good movement, if I was being picky, I would prefer a little more width in front. Hard decision between these two placings, but she didn’t have the sparkle of 1.
3rd – Miller’s CORNTON EILEANACH
Open Bitch (3,1)
1st Wren’s LARCHLEA LIGHT MY FIRE wheaten brindle, nice head with good stop and correct dentition, level topline especially on the move, showed well, good coat.
2nd Rutherford’s AUCHINKYLE GYPSY ROSE. Grey Brindle bitch. Sweet expression, fair movement , lacking in coat today.
